The Jōmon are an ecclectic people with the longest running tradition of ceramics in the world. Thought to have been in amongst Japan’s indigenous cultures, their artefacts and their cultural presence can also be found across the Eurasian continent in the form of the so-called ‘fertility cults’ and veneration of the goddess known as the Dogū - or ‘Venus of the Jomōn’.
